TikTok Shop vs Amazon: should your brand sell on both?
TikTok Shop or Amazon? They're discovery vs search, not rivals. Here's the fee comparison, the halo effect that feeds Amazon sales, and who should sell where.
A creator you've never met holds up your product, talks for forty seconds, and by the morning you've shifted more units than in the previous fortnight. That's TikTok Shop on a good day. Amazon almost never feels like that โ and that gap is exactly why the "which one should I choose?" question has the wrong shape. For most brands, it isn't which. It's how you use both.
Let me explain why, because once the penny drops it changes how you'd spend your next marketing pound.
Discovery vs search โ the difference that decides everything
TikTok Shop is a discovery channel. Nobody opens TikTok to buy a specific dog bed. They're scrolling, a creator makes one look brilliant, and demand is created on the spot. You didn't know you wanted it until someone showed you.
Amazon is a search channel. People arrive already knowing roughly what they want and type it into the box. Demand already exists; the job is to be the listing they choose.
Those are different jobs, and they suit different products and different moments. Get that clear and the rest of the decision almost makes itself.
Which product suits which platform
TikTok tends to win for things you can show: beauty, supplements, hair, home, pet, fashion under about ยฃ40 โ anything with a visual "wow" or a story a creator can tell. It's also where a brand-new brand with no reviews can build trust fast, borrowing it from creators their audience already follows.
Amazon tends to win where there's proven search demand, a wall of reviews doing the reassurance, or repeat-purchase consumables people reorder without thinking. It's also the one to lean on when fast, reliable fulfilment is part of the promise.
The fee picture (it's not as simple as "TikTok's cheaper")
On the sticker, TikTok looks cheaper. Its platform fee sits around 6%, below Amazon's referral fee of roughly 8โ15% depending on category. Case closed? Not quite.
The catch is what sits on top. TikTok sales driven by creators carry an affiliate commission, typically another 8โ22% of the order. Add content costs, sample seeding, and the higher return rates that impulse buys tend to bring, and that "cheaper" channel can end up costing more per delivered, kept sale than Amazon does.
The headline platform fee is the smallest part of the story. Creator commission is where TikTok's real cost lives.
The bit that changes the whole argument: the halo
Here's the finding that should end the "TikTok or Amazon" debate. When a creator features your product on TikTok, a large share of the people who see it โ studies put it around 30โ50% โ don't buy in the app. They go and search for it on Amazon instead, because that's where they already have an account, saved card, Prime delivery and a habit of trusting reviews.
Which means a TikTok campaign doesn't only produce TikTok sales. Brands running creator programmes routinely see a double-digit lift in their Amazon sales on the very same products, during the very same weeks. The channels aren't rivals fighting over one pound. One feeds the other.
Miss that, and you'll judge TikTok on its in-app sales alone and conclude it "didn't work" โ while it was quietly driving your best Amazon fortnight of the quarter. Honestly, we've seen brands nearly switch TikTok off for exactly that reason, right before spotting the Amazon halo in the data.
TikTok creates the want; Amazon captures the purchase. Measure both ends or you'll misjudge both.
Where should you start?
- New brand, demoable product, few reviews? Start on TikTok to create demand and build a bit of trust โ then make sure your Amazon listing is ready to catch the shoppers who go looking.
- Proven search demand, consumable, or fulfilment matters? Amazon is your backbone. TikTok becomes the demand-creation layer you add on top when you're ready.
Either way, the mistake is treating it as a fork in the road. It's a sequence.
Our take
The brands doing well in 2026 stopped arguing TikTok versus Amazon and started measuring the halo between them. Use TikTok for what it's brilliant at โ creating demand at the top of the funnel โ and use Amazon for what it's brilliant at: capturing that demand where the trust, the reviews and the purchase habit already live. Sequenced, they compound. Treated as an either/or, you leave money on both tables.
We're an Amazon agency, so we'll say the quiet part plainly: our interest is in your Amazon channel being ready to catch every shopper a TikTok video sends its way โ the listing sharp, the stock deep, the ads pointed at those branded searches.
